Refutation of Those Who Do Not Follow the Four Schools

Al-Radd ‘Ala man Ittaba’ Ghayr al-Madhahib al-Arba’

Ibn Rajab’s essay Refutation of Those Who Do Not Follow the Four Schools advocates for the necessity of following Islamic scholarship in general, and legal scholarship in particular. A large portion of the essay covers the history of the development of Islamic scholarship and how the Muslim Community came to recognize scholars as the source for authoritative knowledge.

Readers of the essay will notice that Ibn Rajab is engaging individuals who saw themselves as equal or superior to prior generations of scholars, free to cast aside scholarship and to reinterpret without any need for requisite skills and knowledge. Although written seven centuries ago, it might as well have written with today’s reformers in mind.

Ibn Juzay Sufic Exegesis

Selections from Kitab al-Tashil li-Ulum al-Tanzil

Ibn Juzay al-Kalbi began his exegesis of the Quran with a short introduction to the various disciplines related to explaining the Quran. One of the topics he included is Sufism. The basic concern of Sufism is the heart: knowing its good and bad qualities, how to rid it of bad qualities, and how to instill it with the good. Ibn al-Juzay explained its inclusion, saying that Sufism is “connected to the Quran since the Quran mentions divine knowledge, struggling against the self [nafs], and illuminating and purifying hearts via obtaining praiseworthy character and avoiding blameworthy character.” He then enumerated twelve topics related to Sufism which he would explain in his tafsir.

The topics Ibn Juzay covered include: thanks [shukr]; Godfearingness [taqwa]; remembrance [dhikr]; patience [sabr]; tawhid; love for Allah; reliance upon Him [tawakkul]; vigilance [muraqabah]; fear and hope [khawf and raja]; repentance [tawbah]; and sincerity [ikhlas]

Connecting to the Qur'ān

Imam al-Nawawi’s Abridged Guide to Practical Etiquette with the Quran

The key secret to unlocking the Quran and experiencing its innumerable benefits and wisdoms, and receiving its endless guidance is that one must approach it the right way: with “adab.” In Etiquette with the Quran (Al-Tibyan fi adab ḥamalat al-Qurʿan), Imam al-Nawawi explained the right conduct of the bearers of the Quran, and the characteristics of its memorisers and students. He did this by concisely presenting the merits of reciting and following the Quran; the conduct of its teachers, students, and everyone else; the etiquette of reciting and writing the Quran, and respecting its written form. Afterward, Imam al-Nawawi decided to reduce his book even further to make it even more accessible to the busy people of his age. This translation of his abridgement brings this benefit to the busy people of our own age.

Infamies of the Soul

ʿUyūb al-nafs wa adwiyatuha

This work is one of Islam’s earliest comprehensive theories for the purification of the soul. In this short guide, the hadith narrator, Shafiʿi legist, and historian of the early sufis, Imam al-Sulami, presents sixty-nine wicked traits and habits of the soul, including anger, laziness, negligence, self-pity, envy, avarice, lying, and pride. Each infamy is described with its common causes and treatments, usually with relevant Prophetic narrations and statements from early Muslim sages. These infamies incline the soul towards evil and self-reproach. Treating them restores its serenity and certainty. With this translation, English readers can now benefit from the simplicity and practicality of Imam al-Sulami’s classic self-help manual that Arabic readers have utilised for the past millennium.

The Evident Memorandum

Translation and commentary of Al-Tadhkirah fi al-fiqh

In Arabic and English

This volume contains an original commentary for Al-Tadhkirah (The Memorandum), a legal primer for Islamic Law according to the later scholars of the Shāfiʿī school by Ibn al-Mulaqqin, an Egyptian scholar who died in 804 AH/1401 CE. The commentary introduces essential evidence for the core issues of Islamic Law from its primary sources (the Quran, Sunnah, legal analogy, and scholarly consensus).

Supplement for the Seeker of Certitude

Supplement for the Seeker of Certitude presents the sections related to worship from Mūsā al-Ḥajjāwī's Zād al-Mustaqni', an abridgment of Ibn Qudāmah's Al-Muqni' that sticks to the school's official position, removing extraneous issues, and adding a few necessary things. The book is extremely terse yet it still manages to present the basics for the school along with issues rarely found in books twice its length. The book was accepted by scholars of the school to such an extent that some said that whoever has memorized it is fit to be a judge. The book continues to be considered essential reading for students of the school, making it a natural choice for presenting the school to English readers.

It is more advanced than Ḥanbalī Acts of Worship and it is intended to be read as a supplement to it.

The contents of this edition are based on a series of lessons the translator delivered in 2002-2003, with numerous corrections (and only slight editing). The chapters covered in the text include purification, prayer, zakah, fasting, pilgrimage, and jihad. The text includes numerous notes from Manṣūr al-Buhūtī's commentary Al-Rawḍ al-Murbi'.
